Making an application
The process
Down the Block, Inc. screens all applications by requiring documentation, including, but not limited to, proof of identity, proof of address, proof of income, proof of the circumstances surrounding the request, and proof of the expense. For example, should an applicant request the repair of a water heater, Down the Block's requirements would include an estimate from a licensed plumber. (Down the Block reserves the right to require additional estimates.)
Once you submit an application, our board member will meet with you at your home to review your claim and your supporting documents. She will then present your application to the Board of Directors, omitting all identifying information.
We encourage you to ask for assistance for only your most pressing need. Because of budgetary considerations, requests for smaller amounts are more likely to be funded.
Once Down the Block, Inc. has approved an application, payment will be made directly to the provider of goods or services. We never write a check directly to an applicant; rather, we pay the landlord, contractor, utility company, etc.
To be eligible, you must:
be at least 18 years of age
be a legal resident of Millburn/Short Hills, New Jersey for the two immediate years preceding your application
be able to honestly prove need
have fewer than 2 successful applications with Down the Block, Inc.
How To Budget - A Presentation
Since we began helping families in economic distress in 2009, we’ve heard the same refrain over and over: “I just don’t know how to budget my money during these difficult financial times!” So we’ve asked some financial whizzes in town for their suggestions, and offer this introduction as a guide.
